GOUAREC Canal de Nantes à Brest - a photo on Flickriver

            Le canal de Nantes à Brest permettant de désenclaver la Bretagne centrale est un vieux projet du XVIIème siècle. Pourtant, ce n'est qu'en 1811 qu'il se concrétise, pendant les guerres Napoléoniennes, dans le but de se protéger du blocus anglais des ports de Brest et de Nantes. Sa mise en service réelle sera inaugurée en 1858 par Napoléon III.
Son apogée se fera vers 1910. Son trafic commercial diminue fortement dans les années trente avec la création du barrage de Guerlédan. A partir de 1970, se développe la navigation de plaisance puis la voie verte cyclable prend le relai sur le chemin de halage.  

The canal from Nantes to Brest is an old project of the seventeenth century. However, it is only in 1811 that it is concretized during the Napoleonic wars, in order to protect itself from the English blockade of the ports of Brest and Nantes. He have been  be inaugurated in 1858 by Napoleon III.
Its peak will be around 1910. Its commercial traffic drops sharply in the thirties with the creation of the Guerlédan dam. From 1970, boating develops and then the green cycle lane takes over on the towpath.
