Weekly photo competition runner up, 16 November 2012: making soil soup

            Pat Wall, who retired as director of the conservation agriculture program in 2011 and remains very much part of the CIMMYT family, is one of two runners up this week in our photo competition for CIMMYT staff and friends. His photo shows farmers in Bangladesh practicing traditional puddling of the soil before transplanting rice.

As Pat explains, CIMMYT has worked for many years on developing direct seeding technologies for wheat in the rice-wheat system of South Asia. Whilst these spread to millions of hectares, the benefits to the soil were undone each season by puddling for the rice crop. This breaks down soil structure and makes a hard pan to keep the rice flooded—which is fine for rice, but bad for other crops. Now, largely thanks to labor shortages, farmers are moving to direct seeded or direct transplanted rice in unpuddled soil, saving large amounts of water, labour and fuel—and, importantly, improving the soil structure and benefiting the other crops in the rotation. At last the rice-wheat system is starting to become a true conservation agriculture system.
