Steppe Grey Shrike, first winter male - Mega Rarity

            After seeing all the reports and great photos I managed to get a quick lunchtime trip to Burnham Norton. As it happens this was the last day the bird was reported so I am very glad I did!

This is the first recorded Steppe Grey Shrike in Norfolk, and normally inhabits the steppes of Central Asia, wintering in the tropics - so is a bit off course!

It is much paler than the Southern Grey and Great Grey.

Apparently he first settled to take advantage of the ditches being dredged - with the material deposited containing a lot of invertebrates.

Despite being mobbed by Meadow Pipits and chased earlier in the week by a Great Grey Shrike this chap seemed to be doing well. I hope he has a safe onward journey!
