Bridge Z-6

The Bridge Z-6 is the only bobtail swing bridge in existence. It was constructed in 1899 by the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad over the North Branch of the Chicago River at about 1800 North. It is 245 feet in length with a 175-foot span. It was taken over by the Milwaukee Road and is still operational.

Developer Sterling Bay announced a series of public projects last month, including a new bridge over the Chicago River and the Bloomingdale (606) Trail extension at the site of Bridge Z-6. N. Dominick Street will be extended by nearly one mile south from W. Webster Avenue to W. North Avenue. The Dominick Street Bridge will allow drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to cross the Chicago River. The bridge, 80 feet in width, will include two 10-foot pedestrian sidewalks, two 12-foot driving lanes and one 10-foot bike path. The Bloomingdale Trail, part of the 606 park system which currently ends at Walsh Park in Bucktown, will extend eastward underneath the Kennedy Expressway before curving in a northeast direction until it crosses the Chicago River and enters the Lincoln Yards development.

NOTE: The 2.7 miles trail has its eastern trailhead park at 1806 N. Ashland Ave., where a new extension will begin in the second half of 2023, crossing under the Kennedy Expressway and Metra tracks to the east. Utilizing land mostly owned by the Chicago Department of Transportation and the city as well as some by Union Pacific Corporation. It includes the addition of a bridge crossing over N. Ashland Avenue, replacing the old railway bridge demolished during the original trail’s construction. The roughly 800-foot extension will bring the trail N. Elston Avenue, creating a new terminus at the edge of Lincoln Yards. It will eventually cross the North Branch of the Chicago River on Bridge Z-6.
