Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church

            Our Lady of Peace at 2010 E. 79th St. was designed by Catholic church architect Joseph W. McCarthy and completed in 1935. The simple exterior draws from early Roman churches. The more complex interior is filled with Italian Renaissance ornamentation, colorful stained-glass windows and a vast, elaborate coffered ceiling. The sanctuary's tall, sleek wooden altar betrays a subtle Art Deco influence. Today, Our Lady of Peace offers Mass in Haitian French Creole. NOTE: The parish held its last service here on September 6, 2020. It is merging with two other South Side parishes.
