Torrent Duck (male) / Merganetta armata / Pato de los Torrentes

Another view of the male Torrent Duck (Merganetta armata) – this is the only duck in the Andes that has adapted to raging torrents. It has a long stiff tail that assists swimming in turbulent waters and climbing the slippery wet boulders of cold Andean rivers. Distributed from Venezuela south through the entire Andes into Tierra del Fuego. Deforestation and contamination are major threats that have eliminated many populations.
