Surf Life Saver Bollards 2023-03-19 (R5_99A5544,5629,5632,5674)

Late artist Jan Mitchell was commissioned by the City of Geelong to transform reclaimed timber pylons into whimsical works of art. There are over a hundred along the Bollard Trail around the Geelong waterfront in 50 different installations, some single bollards, some in groups. The trail entertains and teaches a little about the history of Geelong.

This diptych shows three installations all depicting surf lifesavers and was shot last weekend on a lovely day with some Flickr friends.

The bollards always bring back poignant memories for me. I shot the entire collection of bollards in 2012, as a little project to distract me whilst I was visiting my Dad as he received cancer treatment in hospital in Geelong. I would visit Dad in the morning, then leave him for the required “quiet time”, get some lunch and go find a few bollards, then return to visit Dad in the afternoons.

Not only do the bollards bring back memories of sad times, the photos, when I look at them, remind me of how bad my photography was back in 2012 (I began to teach myself in 2011).
