The Castle Down the Street - a photo on Flickriver

            This image goes back to 2014 when I visited the quaint Welsh town of Hay-on-Wye, which sits on the English border.  This photo of the Hay Castle languished without my attention because it needed quite a bit of editing.  I finally got around to correcting the perspective distortion caused by my wide-angle lens, and darkening the sky,  which the camera made too bright with the 1½-second shutter speed.  (This was taken at 10:25 pm, so it was dark to the eye but not to the camera.)

Hay Castle started as a military fortification for the Norman push into Wales.  The medieval castle part of the structure is on the left and dates to the late 11th or early 12th century.  It was attacked and burned several times in Welsh uprisings as well as during the War of the Roses.  The Dutch-gabled mansion on the right side was added in the 1600s.  Several fires largely destroyed the interior during the 20th century.  As of 2018, the castle was slated for restoration as a culture, arts and education center.
