French Journal Day 39 (Travel Diary Day 119)

Rachel and I have spent the day in bed, sick. We're not too bad - just a 'bug' according to Rachel. I have to be careful not to implicate her cooking.

Rachel was ill this morning and mine came on a little later. She thinks I'm faking mine so I can lie in bed all day too.

She's been a top class chef recently, experimenting with recipes and herbs that I've never heard of. I really look forward to feeding time. I think the European air has gotten to her, it's encouraged her culinary creativity. She needs to write more of her recipes on her blog. Most of them are extremely healthy too, because she doesn't want me getting fat/fatter.

To wind away the day I've been editing photos. Rach says she can't believe I'm interested in editing photos during a time of sickness. In truth, I'm an obsessive person. I can't do certain things by half-measures.

If I wasn't obsessing about this, I'd be obsessing over something else. Usually, my obsessions last about 6 months to a year, at which time I would have reached whatever mini-goal I would have set myself.

When I was younger I set myself the task of getting in the best shape of my life. I had an all-out 8 month training regime, with healthy supplements and all. I got to about 8% body fat, and had a resting heart rate of about 54. Once the 8 months were up I stopped. I'd completed my goal and felt healthier but not fulfilled. Rachel wasn't really keen on the toned look.

I had a similar experience with my 12 month intense Spanish learning challenge. By the end of it I could converse comfortably, read medium level novels, and enjoy watching certain TV programs.Unlike the fitness challenge, learning languages is something I kept up, but in a more relaxed manner.

With photography, it has moved beyond goals and challenges. I struggle to see a future without a camera in my hand. It's formed a major part of who I am. I'm putting it down to the fact that it's the first artistic medium with which I've been able to express myself.

For me, today, it has helped to take my mind off some of the symptoms.

Pagodas like these can be seen all along the Sanur coastline, on Bali. I had to wait a while for two lovebirds to finish cuddling on this before I could start shooting.
