LAKE TAHOE — Several feet of snow are expected in the Sierra this weekend as the winter season's second significant storm prepares to pound the region, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Light snow will begin Friday morning, according to a winter storm watch, with the heaviest snow occurring Friday night through Sunday morning.

In all, 15 to 30 inches of snow are possible at lake level, with 3 to 6 feet likely above 7,000 feet. Higher amounts are possible along the Sierra crest and Lake Tahoe's West Shore.

"Hourly snowfall rates may exceed 2 or 3 inches per hour during the strongest portion of the storm," NWS reports.

Wind gusts during the storm of 40 to 60 mph are expected, with gusts of more than 100 mph along the Sierra ridges.

Avalanche danger could increase significantly this weekend, NWS reports. Motorists are encouraged to alter travel plans to avoid dangerous conditions, and backcountry activities in the Sierra are strongly discouraged this weekend.

Mother Nature began the ski season strongly in mid-November, dumping a 6- to 9-foot storm at higher-elevation areas in the Truckee/Tahoe region. This week, a 1- to 2-foot storm hit Tuesday, much to the powdery delight Wednesday of skiers and riders in the region.
