Our Wealth Was 'Grounded' In Diamonds and Gold!

            The creation of an industrial society in South Africa was, from the late 19th Century, undergirded by the discovery and exploitation of a unique concentration of precious metals and minerals. From diamonds to gold and platinum, the industries and wealth that they spawned were vast and extensive, Greater Johannesburg became - and remains - the hub of the industrial and increasingly 'post-industrial' society that South Africa has become. It is a 'gritty' city, dynamic, cosmopolitan and ever-growing. This picture captures, from the top of the tallest building on the African continent - the Carlton Centre - something of that grittiness. In particular, central to the frame, is the iconic 11 Diagonal Street, once the headquarters of the Anglo American Corporation, and designed by the German-American architect, Helmut Jahn. It's shaped - of course - like a diamond! But the city's economic and financial hub has moved ever northwards - a process that began as far back as the 1950s - and is now centred mainly in Sandton, a kind of 'Neustadt' that is under constant construction. This detail of the 'old' Central Business District' captures the essence of the Johannesburg I personally most love. I often think of it as the fictional 'Gotham City of the South'.
