Portrayal of an Old Synagogue - a photo on Flickriver

This Jugendstil portrayal of an old synagogue that caught my eye at the Mathildenhoehe Jugendstil museum. I was told that the synagogue had either stood in Dresden or more likely Essen (cities far from one another). I'd be glad if anyone could fill me in with further details. I thought initially that It might have been a victim of Nazi Antisemitism or been bombed during WWII (if it is no longer extant).

My question has since been answered by Lady Silke's World. Thanks to her, we now know that the synagogue still stands, was externally damaged by Nazis, but not destroyed, and serves now as a museum in Essen. As can be seen from the (better and fuller) German entry, the very picture that I photographed is among the images used! :-)
