There was a church here at the time of the 1086 Domesday Survey , the north wall of the chancel being the only surviving fragment of this Norman building.
Much of the present structure dates from the 14c & 15c , with more work undertaken here during the 19c.
In 1326 Lady Maud De Tony of Coxford Priory Manor paid for the building of the north chapel of St Catherine (rebuilt in 19c , now the parish room), with much of the present structure being rebuilt in the years following this consisting of a nave, chancel, south aisle & porch .
In c1490 the nave was heightened with clerestory windows & a new glorious angel hammer-beam roof . www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/E8RB9E Made of 60 tons of carved oak and chestnut, it was thoroughly repaired in 1838 and the damaged parts of the carvings replaced. Large angels on the hammer-beams lean out over the congregation. It was restored again in 1982.
In 1504 there were gilds of our Saviour, the Holy Trinity, All-Saints, St. John Baptist and St. Mary; also the altar of St. Mary, and that of the Holy Trinity, lights of St. Mary, the Youngmen's light amongst others.
There are many 15c & 16c brass effigies "not at present visible" according to the guide, (I have uploaded rubbings / drawings of them )
The majority of the tower was re-built 1864 - 1865 after the previous tower cracked under the weight of the peal of six bells cast by Thomas Mears of Whitechapel and on one is the inscription ' This peal of six bells was hung in June 1833 in the reign of His Majesty Wm 4th...'.. The rebuilding cost c £1,200, half paid by Colonel Mason of Necton Hall at the same time as he was enlarging his home (demolished in 1989)
The tower of 3 stages and buttressed to three quarters of the way up, has a c1865 clock on the west face and an octagonal lantern with lead finial at the top.
