Satyrus actaea ( Negra ) - a photo on Flickriver

            Mariposa de tamaño medio con una envergadura alar de: 48-50 mm, existe cierto dimorfismo sexual, en cuanto al tono general de las alas. El anverso es negro en los machos y marrón oscuro en las hembras, poseen dos ocelos de pupila, a veces uno solo, en el ala superior. 
El reverso muestra una disposición de los ocelos, similar al anverso, las hembras son de tonos bastante más claros gris que los machos (pardo oscuro), el ala inferior posee tres bandas o áreas con diferentes tonalidades, siendo característica la más interna, por poseer un borde aserrado muy anguloso, hecho diferenciador con otras especies próximas como Satyrus férula, estas bandas están delimitadas por unos bordes blancos o más claros.
Península Ibérica, costa mediterránea Francesa y Magreb. En la Península Ibérica es más frecuente, cuanto más al Sur y Este.
Vive en zonas abiertas cálidas y laderas rocosas en montañas, al parecer siempre en lugares calizos, desde 900 a 2200 metros, vuela de agosto a septiembre, en una generación al año, la puesta de huevos se realizan de uno en uno, la oruga es de color grisáceo con líneas longitudinales dorsales y laterales claras y oscuras. 
Muy variado Herbazales, en los bordes de prados higroturbosos, conocidos popularmente como "borreguiles", laderas secas, bordes de arroyos, desde el nivel del mar hasta la alta montaña a 3.000 msnm.
Esta especie está incluida en el Libro rojo de las mariposas europeas en la categoría SPEC 4ª especies europeas endémicas no amenazadas) .

Vuela principalmente en la mitad sur de la Peninsula Iberica 
Generaciones: entre junio,  julio y agosto 
Hábitat: Prefiere espacios abiertos, zonas de vegetacion pobre. 
Altitud: entre 200 y 3.000 metros 
Observaciones: en Sierra Nevada se ha citado la subsp nevadensis y la subs podarcina, la primera vuela a mayor altitud.
