Saint Therese Little Flower Catholic Church - Wendouree Parade, Ballarat

            Built just a year before the outbreak of the Second World War, Saint Therese Little Flower Catholic Church in Wendouree Parade is one of Ballarat’s more hidden places of worship as it stands beneath the shade of a large tree in its grounds.

Opened on Sunday, 17th of April 1938 by the Most Reverent D. Foley, the Bishop of Ballarat, Saint Therese Little Flower Church was built by A. J. Wilson.  Designed by local architect P. J. O’Connor, the church is a tribute to the prevailing Spanish Mission style, so popular in the late 1930s.  It features stuccoed walls , rounded grille covered windows, a doorway with a Spanish styled cartouche above it and rounded terracotta tiles.  All these architectural elements were in vogue at the time.

Surrounded by well maintained grounds, Saint Therese Little Flower Church maintains its original red brick wall with rounded newel posts and its original wrought iron gate.  

The Spanish Mission style was typically a style that emerged in California during the interwar years and spread across the world.
