Street Life. - a photo on Flickriver

Street Life.

            A place that had been on my "bucket list" for many years was the Himalayan Mountain Railway. 
It used to operate from Siliguri to Darjeeling and would take 7 hours to complete the 55 mile journey. Nowadays steam operation is confined to the 4 mile section from Ghum to Darjeeling. Ghum is the highest station on the line and the climbe from Darjeeling is impressive.
I am sure we have all seen many images from the line high in the mountains with the locos reversing at various places in stunning countryside. My plan was to try and take some shots that showed the grit and grime of the line also to do some low light photography.
This is a shot of B class steam loco 782 which is the oldest loco working built in 1889 by Sharp Stewart & Co.
The railway is without doubt a tourist attraction and known affectionally as  "The Toy Train" to my mind this doesn't do it justice and the hard working locos are still doing the same today as they have done for over 100 years.
Darjeeling is known for its clean air and beautiful views of the Himalayers but the truth abouth the town is it is filled with poverty, dust and dirt. The steam loco is seen grinding through the Darjeeling suburbs in shockingly close proximity to the houses and shops. 
One last thing is that the sun seemed to always be in the wrong position and the trains always ran on the shady side of the street.
