The Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) is the largest of the four crocodile species found in Africa. 
They have a maximum length of 6.2 m from the head to the tip of the tail. They usually weigh 225 kg, but will reach weights of up to 730 kg.  The males grow up to 30% larger than the females. 
There are an estimated 250,000 to 500,000 individuals in the wild. The Nile Crocodile is found throughout most of Africa, from Egypt to South Africa, with strong, documented populations in many countries in east and southern Africa, including Egypt, Somalia, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe. As its name suggests, it is present in the Nile River. It is absent from the Sahara Desert. It is even found in Madagascar. 
Nile Crocodiles live in freshwater swamps, rivers, lakes, and other watery places. 
The crocodiles eat almost anything in the water, such as fish, turtles, or birds. They even eat buffaloes, antelope, big cats, and sometimes people, when given the chance. Nile Crocodiles are sneaky, and get their food easily. When they sneak up on drinking animals, only their eyes and nose show. The rest of their body is hidden underwater. They are also camouflage in the water, so they are almost impossible to see.
The Nile crocodile has an average life span of 45 years in the wild, 80 in captivity.

De nijlkrokodil (Crocodylus niloticus) is de grootste van de vier in Afrika voorkomende soorten krokodillen.
De nijlkrokodil kan een lengte van 6,2 m en een gewicht van gemiddeld 225 kg bereiken. Oude zware dieren zelfs uiteindelijk meer dan 730 kg. De mannetjes worden circa 30 % groter dan de vrouwtjes.
De nijlkrokodil komt in grote delen van Afrika van Egypte tot Zuid-Afrika voor. Zelfs in brakwater aan de kust in West-Afrika en op Madagaskar. De habitat bestaat uit rivieren, meren, plassen en moerassen.
De nijlkrokodil is voornamelijk in de nacht actief en ligt overdag vaak te zonnen en pakt, als de kans zich voordoet, langslopende prooien. De krokodil staat bekend als grote eter, maar kan in geval van voedselschaarste zich wel 2 jaar van voedsel onthouden. 
Volwassen exemplaren eten voornamelijk grotere vissen.  Een vis wordt altijd in één keer doorgeslikt en de kop eerst: zo voorkomt de krokodil dat de vis door eventuele stekels in zijn keel blijft steken. 
Daarnaast wordt op zowel kleine als grotere gewervelden gejaagd zoals antilopen, kafferbuffels, wrattenzwijnen, jonge nijlpaarden en zelfs grotere katachtigen als leeuwen worden soms gegrepen. Ook mensen worden soms aangevallen. Waarschijnlijk worden enkele honderden mensen per jaar opgegeten door de nijlkrokodil.
Alles wat tussen de grote kaken komt en onder water gesleurd wordt, is reddeloos verloren.
Een nijlkrokodil wordt in het wild gemiddeld 45 jaar en tot 80 jaar in gevangenschap.
