Love-in-a-mist (Passiflora foetida) - a photo on Flickriver

            At Pallikaranai, Chennai

Two things about this plant continue to intrigue me:

1) What is the specific history behind this American native coming to India?

2) This is a 'protocarnivorous' plant i.e. it traps and kills insects/other animals but it is not sure if it either directly digests or absorbs nutrients from its prey like a carnivorous plant. The bracts of this plant serve as insect traps, but it is as yet unknown whether the plant digests and gains nourishment from the trapped insects or if it merely uses the bracts as a defensive mechanism to protect its flowers and fruit. This is still an issue of debate and research.
