Watching the Mart

            Two women, most likely mother and daughter watch the Mart from afar from the small upstairs viewing gallery. Maybe they were watching some beloved stock been sold, avoiding the hustle and bustle of the sales ring, the glances of inquisitive neighbors or friends on the gravel’s final strike. A price made or not, of course we might never know.

I made myself as invisible as possible to get the shot in this small bare space. In the days before for ubiquitous mobile camera ownership and instant posting, film cameras attracted novel attention and sometimes suspicious unwelcomed officialdom in some quarters. Not the case here I might add. I never did get their names, but experience had thought me to get the shot first and then ask for permission, sometimes taking further unwarranted shots after the dynamic of the original had passed.

And the dynamic has now indeed past, the Mart was closed in 2002 and torn down soon after, the site been replaced by a shiny Tesco superstore, so next time your in their vast meat aisle, pause a thought for all their ancestors that once stood here before….
