Two swans in flight - a photo on Flickriver

            Swans are the largest waterfowl in the duck family, with long necks and heavy bodies. Adult mute swans have predominantly pure white plumage, dark gray legs and a bright orange bill with a black base. Juveniles first have gray brown or gray down and a dark gray to black bill. During the first to second year of life their plumage gradually turns white and the bill takes on the typical orange coloration. Worldwide there are currently six species of true swans which occur mainly in the temperate and colder zones of Europe Asia and North America as well as in parts of the Southern Hemisphere. The species of the Northern Hemisphere are predominantly white, whereas in Australia and South America there are also forms with black plumage or a black neck. Swans feed mainly on aquatic plants which they reach by dabbling or grazing in shallow water and they also occasionally take small aquatic animals. A characteristic feature is an often lifelong pair bond which can dissolve again after unsuccessful breeding attempts. The nests are on the ground close to water and both adult birds take part in incubating the eggs and raising the young.
