Rhynchophorus ferrugineus - a photo on Flickriver

            The other day, while we were having a quiet dinner in our backyard, we were surprised by the unexpected visit of this curious weevil, drawn to the light that brightens our little night corner. When we saw it flying, we were stunned, even though it might not look like it in the photo, it's quite a large beetle, and it was the first time I’d ever seen one in person.

Since I had no idea what species it was, I did a bit of research... and it turns out to be none other than the infamous red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus), an invasive species originally from Asia that has caused serious damage here in Spain.

It feeds mainly on palm trees and has severely affected native species, to the point of being listed in the official catalogue of invasive exotic species. So this little guy — who looks like he’s got a heart drawn on his shell — is a real problem with legs.
