Architectural Geology of Segovia, Spain, Part 27: Segovia Cathedral (completed AD 1577)

"Toto, I've a feeling that we're not in the Romanesque anymore."

Near the end of this exploration of Segovia's architecture, we've finally wandered into the Gothic, and very late Gothic indeed, given the fact that the Cathedral wasn't finished till the second half of the sixteenth century. The Renaissance style had already taken hold elsewhere in Spain. Only the dome, which was added around AD 1630, points to the latter school.

I've come across no sources that explicitly cite the origin of the Cathedral's exterior ashlar. But its color and texture, so consonant with the Segovia Sandstone of the older churches already discussed, make me confident that we're seeing that splendid, warm-toned clastic rock once again. I've come across one source that suggests there is also granite—the Guadarrama used in the Segovia Aqueduct? But the sandstone forms the bulk of what we see here.

Late Cretaceous in age, the Segovia Sandstone was deposited at the foot of the Iberian Peninsula's Central Range in the opening phase of the Alpine Orogeny. At that point, the breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea was well underway.
