Geobrickology, Part 1: Old St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Near West Side, Chicago, Illinois, USA (1856)

The Windy City's oldest surviving church, Old St. Pat's was saved from the flames of the 1871 Great Fire because a separate conflagration that occurred just one night before had cleared away most of the flammable material to the south of this site.

The eclectic design of this house of worship features steeples of both Eastern and Western European styles. Geologically, the church is notable because it combines two great regional building materials.

The plinth and trim are Lemont-Joliet Dolostone of the Silurian Sugar Run Formation, quarried in southwestern Chicagoland's Lower Des Plaines River Valley. But much more extensively employed is the famous, pale-yellow Cream City Brick. It was manufactured about 90 mi (145 km) up the Lake Michigan coast in Milwaukee, from that city's fluviatile and lacustrune clays.
