Hanson & Hall 50008 & GBRf 50007 1Z77 - Queen Adelaide

            Hanson & Hall class 50 No. 50008 ‘Thunderer’ top and tails with fellow class 50 No. 50007 ‘Hercules’ (50034 ‘Furious’) in GBRf livery approaching Ely, seen here passing Queen Adelaide working the final leg of the BLS ‘Merry Wherry’ tour around the Norfolk Coast between Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft, this being the 1Z77 17:25 Lowestoft to Derby seeing them heading back after their day out. This day did not go as planned for me but I still managed to get this train in three different locations with successful shots at each one. It’s not often I see class 50s as it is, the last time I saw one operating was at the Severn Valley Railway last year for their spring gala, and getting one through my local area was something nit to be missed so I’m glad I managed to get some shots of this in the end. I got bad luck with the sun at the first occasion when it ran towards Norwich but I got lovely sun here and the final time I saw it when it was returning to Derby. I also had to be quite cautions as to what shots I did today as the wind was at speed over 40mph so using a pole would be a bit difficult. Here I only went two sections up and that was windy enough for me! All in all a good day.

But it didn’t start looking good, with forecasts in my area looking dull, I thought I’d have to make do without sun for the day. I went to Prickwillow for the morning run, not at all what I had planned, in fact I had originally planned to chase it round the Wherry’s. When they were approaching Ely loop, the OTT maps and RTT site went down and we were receiving no further updates. We waited and expected it to come a few minuets early as it didn’t stop at March from what we could tell. When it didn’t turn up when we expect it and 1K68 came first, we started to wonder what was going on. After a bit more waiting it did finally arrive, in what we thought was going to be lovely sun until it came closer and the shadows crept up on the train and overtook it, the sun only came out after 50007 had passed. I thought after that I couldn’t see it anymore as my plans of chasing it had been cancelled the night before. It wasn’t until later in the evening the chance came to go see it in Queen Adelaide which I took and this is the shot I got, the sun was much brighter and clearer here, it had just come out of a large clump of cloud before it came which is why this shot looks maybe a bit bright. Afterwards I would see it one more time at Ely West Junction with 50007 leading. So yes, all in all it was a good day.
