Near this spot I had my first and so far last “meeting” with a shark, which emerged out of the see weeds while I was snorkling back from a nearby reef. After looking at each other for a while the shark finally turned away and took off to the open sea. I was so “shocked” that the shark hadn’t attacked me that I systematically gathered all informations I could find when back home. And I learned that most shark attacks on humans are due to wrong behavior and/or a lack of respect for the animal. On the other hand it is estimated that we kill nearly 100 million (!) sharks every year. In 2021, it was estimated that the population of oceanic sharks and rays had dropped by 71% over the previous half-century.
