1472, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Madonna of Mercy protecting members of the Vespucci family (Madonna della Misericordia) -- Chiesa di San Salvatore in Ognissanti (Florence)

            From the church label: The subject of this chapel depicts the relationship between the customer (Amerigo Vespucci family, grandfather of the Sailor) and the merciful protection requested to the Virgin Mary. In fact, under Her broad cloak, symbol of protection, you can observe two kneeling elders looking at Mary and two of their ancestors in prayer on the sides of the fresco.

Ghirlandaio is known for its incisive portraits; in fact you can see a particular facial expression in the underlying "Mourned on the dead Christ" (in Italian "Compianto" and non "Deposition", because of the distance of the Cross). Ghirlandaio tries to build a relationship with the observer, revealed by the face at the left of the Madonna and also watching the Saint in dark clothes holding a palm branch (symbol of martyrdom).

The depiction is a sign of the commissioner's family need of divine help, presumably due to the kind of interests of the Vespucci family, as they were constantly traveling around the world. This is sign of devotion to the Madonna and part of a family tradition initiated by Simone Vespucci (buried in the chapel on the right side of the transept), who founded in 1382 the Holy Mary of Humility Hospital.
