The exuberant and once controversial south porch of St Mary the Virgin, Oxford.

            In prime position along The High, the porch, and its stunning ironwork gate, was built in 1637, just a few years before the beginning of the English Civil War and at the height of Puritanism and anti catholicism.
It's architecture is very 'popish' in flavour, particularly of course the statue of the Madonna and Child, and within five years, passing Parliamentarian soldiers had shot off the heads of both. Apparently there are still bullet holes in the surrounding stonework.

The porch was paid for by a former chaplain to the unpopular and high handed Archbishop Laud and this porch was even used as evidence of Laud's  popish leanings at the trial before his execution in 1644.
His remains are buried at St John's College, his 'alma mater'.
