The University Church of St Mary the Virgin. Radcliffe Square, Oxford

The oldest remaining part of the church is its rather severe, almost castle-like tower, built in the late 1270's, but any austerity of design is more than made up for by the exuberant spire that crowns it; a great forest of carved pinnacles that dates to the early 14th century, and considered perhaps the most beautiful spire in England. On the right are the long line of windows of the Greenland Library of Brasenose College.
