TWO hundred musicians and their equipment and instruments left John F. Kennedy International Airport yesterday for Le Cartellet, France, where between 200,000 and 300,000 people are expected to attend Riviera '76, a three‐day festival that begins this evening. The producer of the event, Mike Lang, was coproducer of the Woodstock festival of 1967. He was caught by surprise by the crowds that came to Woodstock, but this time he is prepared.
The festival site is the Circuit Paul Ricard, a 1,500‐acre race track surrounded by a concrete wall eight feet high. Ample medical, culinary, and sanitary facilities are promised, along with a three‐dimensional laser light show. A nearby island has been rented for the musicians, who will be ferried to the festival by helicopter and speedboat.

Riviera '76 sounds like the sort of festival at which many rock musicians would love to perform, but in fact isn't a rock festival.
It's being described by its promoters as a fusion festival, which means that the musicians and groups who are participating will be playing jazz‐rock, latin‐rock, and other, multi‐hyphenated styles. “Riviera '76 is introducing what we believe to be the new direction of music,” says Frank Yandolino, the festival's United States coordinator. “We're saying that jazz‐rock, with a touch of salsa, is the future of music.”

If Mr. Lang and Mr. Yandolino are right, a Woodstocksized fusion festival in the United States may not be far off. But in a sense they are hedging their bets; jazz‐rock has been big box office in Europe almost since its inception. Soft Machine, Jean‐Luc Ponty, and other musicians and groups were playing electric music that fell somewhere between the jazz and rock idioms back in the late 1960's, before Miles Davis recorded his first electric albums and John McLaughlin, his guitarist, left to form the first jazzrock super group, the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Unhyphenated jazz is big in Europe too. “We're having the festival there,” Mr. Yandolino says, “because jazz is well taken there and because a Woodstock has never really happened there. Of course, if we draw as many people as we expect, we'll have the biggest festival in history on our hands.”

There are a few nonfusion purists among the artists who are scheduled to perform, including Joe Cocker, the rock singer; Jimmy Cliff, the reggae singer, and McCoy Tyner, the acoustic jazzman. Latin music is represented by Ray Barreto and Eddie Palmieri. The other artists are Airto, Larry Coryell, the Crusaders, Betty Carter, Gil Scott‐Heron, Al Jarreau, Dave Liebman, Magma, Pat Martino, Masekela, Passport, Jean‐Luc Ponty, Shakti featuring John McLaughlin, Michael Urbaniak, the Tony Williams Lifetime, Roberta Flack, and a new band formed by two recent dropouts from Return To Forever, Lenny White and Al DiMeola, with Brian Auger on keyboards.
The royalty of jazz‐rock is only partially represented by this list. Among the absent names are Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, and the Billy Cobham/George Duke Band, who make up an even more impressive list all by themselves. But the Riviera '76 roster is a solid one, and if the festival proves successful, it could signal a breakthrough for a number of jazz‐trained musicians who have been courting the sort of mass acceptance a festival of Woodstocklike dimensions can confer.
