            Wer klopft und hämmert doch im Wald
Den lieben langen Tag,
Dass weit durch Feld und Thal hin schallt
Das Klopfen Schlag auf Schlag?
 
Das ist ein kleiner Zimmermann,
Versteht sein Werk nicht schlecht;
Er hämmert, was er hämmern kann,--
Das ist der Meister Specht.
 
Die Axt, die unser Zimmermann,
Das kleine Meisterlein,
So frisch und kräftig schwingen kann,
Das muss sein Schnabel sein.
 
Was haut es sich, was baut es sich,
Das Zimmermännlein dort?
Es baut kein Haus, und emsiglich
Haut es doch immerfort.
 
Nach Würmlein und nach Käferlein
Sucht er, das schmeckt nicht schlecht;
Drum mag er nimmer müßig sein,
Der kleine Meister Specht.
