Le riz en danger

            Non Tum (Vietnam) - Le riz est la principale culture vivrière au Vietnam, où il joue un rôle essentiel pour assurer la sécurité alimentaire. La production largement excédentaire et permet les exportations.  
Le pays a exporté 4,5 millions de tonnes de riz au cours des cinq premiers mois de 2025 pour 2,34 milliards de dollars américains. Si les exportations de riz progressent de 12,2 % par rapport à la même période l’année dernière, le cours du riz a chuté de 18,7 % en valeur.
Dans le delta du Mékong, au sud du pays, on note une progression rapide de l’eau de mer qui fait disparaitre la culture du riz. L’élévation du niveau de la mer est liée au réchauffement climatique ; mais le phénomène se double d’un autre danger : l’urbanisation rapide du delta où le poids des constructions et l’exploitation des nappes phréatiques affaissent les sols à grande vitesse.
Selon les scientifiques du « Centre asiatique de recherche sur l’eau », les conclusions de leurs études sont sans appel : si rien n’est fait pour ralentir la tendance, d’ici la fin du siècle, 85 % des terres du delta seront sous l’eau.
Il est à noter que la montée des eaux ne serait responsable que du cinquième du risque de submersion. C’est l’urbanisation galopante et incontrôlée qui porte la plus grande responsabilité de la catastrophe annoncée. Il est encore temps d’agir…

Rice in Danger

Rice is the main food crop in Vietnam, where it plays a vital role in ensuring food security. Production is largely surplus and enables exports.
The country exported 4.5 million tons of rice in the first five months of 2025, worth US$2.34 billion. While rice exports increased by 12.2% compared to the same period last year, the price of rice fell by 18.7% in value.
In the Mekong Delta, in the south of the country, there is a rapid rise in seawater levels, which is wiping out rice cultivation. Rising sea levels are linked to global warming; but the phenomenon is compounded by another danger: the rapid urbanization of the delta, where the weight of construction and the exploitation of groundwater are rapidly sinking the soil. According to scientists from the Asian Water Research Center, the conclusions of their studies are clear: if nothing is done to slow the trend, by the end of the century, 85% of the delta's land area will be underwater. It's worth noting that rising water levels are only responsible for one-fifth of the risk of submersion. It is rampant and uncontrolled urbanization that bears the greatest responsibility for the impending catastrophe. There is still time to act...
