Well, no, it's not really smoke, but rather a wispy cloud seemingly drifting out from the branches of this very dry Ocotillo shrub in the Pinto Basin of Joshua Tree National Park, part of the Colorado Desert.  

Ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens) is one of those fascinating desert plants that is full of surprises.  For most of the year it looks like a tall bundle of dry, thorny sticks but, when it rains, a small miracle occurs.  Tiny,oval, bright green leaves suddenly sprout from the stems and the mature branch tips produce a profusion of delicate, crimson blossoms that attract hummingbirds and native carpenter bees.  The plant may remain green for weeks or even months after a good rainfall, but eventually the leaves and flowers wither and drop off and the Ocotillo will go dormant again, waiting patiently for the next cloudburst.
