Roots and rocks - a photo on Flickriver

Roots and rocks

            The sand around this tree root has been washed away by wind and water, leaving the roots suspended in air and the smooth rocks lying in a tumble below.  Tree roots usually lay hidden beneath the soil, so it's always a wonder to me when I come across a scene like this, where the "bones" of the tree are exposed and vulnerable to the elements and yet still do their job of holding up and feeding the trunk, branches and leaves.  For me this is a kind of testament to the tenacity of life.  This shot was taken on a beach of the Waipi'o Valley on the northern Hamakua Coast, Big Island of Hawai'i.
