Kleines Gässlein in Monteviasco im nördöstlichen Berghinterland des Lago Maggiore in Norditalien

Das Bergdorf war seit jeher nur über Bergpfade und Saumpfade erreichbar. Hauptzugangsweg ist ein 1813 angelegter Fußweg mit etwa 1.400 Stufen, der von Westen vom Tal Val Vedasca über 400 Höhenmeter ins Dorf führt. Gleichwohl lebten hier Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts fast 400 Menschen. Im 20. Jahrhundert setzte wegen der abseitigen Lage der stetige Wegzug insbesondere von jungen Menschen ein. Zur besseren Erreichbarkeit wurde 1989 eine Seilbahn eröffnet. Ihr Betrieb ermöglichte auch eine gewisse touristische Entwicklung.

Allerdings musste die Seilbahn nach einem tödlichen Unfall 2018 stillgelegt werden. Trotz Sanierungsarbeiten an der Bahn konnte bis heute kein neuer Betreiber gefunden werden, so dass der Ort wie in alten Zeiten nur zu Fuß erreichbar ist. Dies beschleunigte die Abwanderung der verbliebenen Einwohner.

Aktuell harren nur etwa 10-15 Personen im Ort aus, überwiegend ältere Personen, die von Freiwilligen und Carabinieri zu Fuß versorgt werden.

Da die Einwohner mit der Situation völlig unzufrieden sind, haben sie im November 2022 den Anschluss des Dorfes an die nahe gelegene Schweiz gefordert. Davon wird sich eine Wiederinbetriebnahme der Seilbahn erhofft.

Motivmäßig war der Ausflug nach Monteviasco unheimlich spannend. auf der einen Seite war das Dorf weitgehend verlassen. Andererseits fehlte aber die gewisse Aura des verlorenen und aufgegebenen, die sonst solche Lost Places umweht. Man sah dem Dorf in weiten Teilen an, dass noch Hoffnung für eine Wiederbelebung besteht. So war die Kirche offen und gepflegt. Auch eine kleine Gaststätte hatte offen - warme Küche gab's aber leider nur für die Einwohner. Bleibt spannend, wie es mit dem Dorf weitergeht.

The mountain village has always been accessible only via mountain paths and mule tracks. The main access route is a footpath laid out in 1813 with around 1,400 steps, which leads from the west of the Val Vedasca valley over 400 meters in altitude to the village. Nevertheless, almost 400 people lived here in the mid-19th century. In the 20th century, due to the remote location, the constant migration, especially of young people, began. A cable car was opened in 1989 to improve accessibility. Their operation also enabled a certain tourism development.

However, the cable car had to be shut down after a deadly accident in 2018. Despite renovation work on the railway, no new operator has been found to this day, so that the place can only be reached on foot, as in the old days. This accelerated the exodus of the remaining residents.

Currently only about 10-15 people are staying in the village, mostly older people who are cared for by volunteers and carabinieri on foot.

Completely dissatisfied with the situation, the residents demanded that the village be annexed to nearby Switzerland in November 2022. It is hoped that this will bring the cable car back into service.

The trip to Monteviasco was incredibly exciting. on the one hand the village was largely deserted. On the other hand, the certain aura of being lost and abandoned that otherwise surrounds such lost places was missing. One could see in large parts of the village that there was still hope for a revival. So the church was open and cared for. A small restaurant was also open - but unfortunately there was only warm food for the residents. It will be interesting to see how the village will continue.
