Rough-legged Hawk (Buteo lagopus) - Delta, BC

            These beautiful hawks have sharply declined. I used to see dozens around my hometown area but now you are lucky if you see one or 2 individuals in a year. They are affected by climate change in their breeding grounds as their prey and nests are affected by the warming climate. Many nest on cliffs and on the ground up there and their young chicks get wet and cold and die from rain and their prey of lemmings also suffer from the rains because the rain freezes and prevents the lemmings from getting to their food and they die and produce less young. They are my favourite bird of all too so hope they can recover and bounce back but that will depend on humans making changes that affect animals, birds and people in the arctic.
