122nd Fighter Wing, Indiana ANG, Baer Field Forth Wayne Air National Guard Base, Fort Wayne, Indiana
The 122nd FW of the Indiana ANG can trace it’s heritage back to the Second World War when it was initially formed as the when it was formed as the 358th Fighter Group (The Orange Tails) serving after training in the England with the USAAF’s 8th and finally the 9th Tactical Air force in Europe.
Deactivated at the end of WW2 it was reactivated in 1946 as the 122nd Fighter Group and allocated to the Indiana ANG. Since 1946 the unit has had a number of designation including 122nd Fighter Interception Wing, 122nd Tactical Fighter Wing, 122nd Tactical Fighter Wing (Special Delivery) and finally in 1992 till the present day as the 122nd Fighter Wing.
The unit has used a number of different aircraft over the years that reads like a who’s who of some the US’s best fighter and attack aircraft. Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, Republic P-47D Thunderbolt, North American P-51 Mustang, Lockheed F-80C Shooting Star (displayed), North American F-86A Sabre (displayed) , Republic RF-84F + F-84F Thunderstreak (displayed), North American F-100D/F Super Sabre (displayed), McDonnell Douglas F-4C/E Phantom ll (displayed), General Dynamics F-16C Fighting Falcon (displayed in a Heritage scheme to the 358th), Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt ll - Warthog (displayed)
