Mingo Falls

Mingo Falls, Cherokee, North Carolina

These falls are just south of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, located in a trust of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation. At 120 feet tall, Mingo is one of the tallest and most impressive falls in the southern Appalachians. The hike to see it is short but strenuous, and you are rewarded with an impressive view from the base while standing on a charming little bridge over Mingo Creek. The word is Cherokee for "Big Bear".

As an added plus for getting to the falls, the town of Cherokee itself is far less commercialized and is saddled with less traffic than Gatlinburg, the northern alternative leading into Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Be sure and stop in at the Oconaluftee Visitor's Center, there are herds of elk south of the center during morning and evening hours.
