Kevers (Coleoptera) zijn een orde van gevleugelde insecten (Insecta). Kevers verschillen van alle andere insecten door de voorvleugels die veranderd zijn in harde schilden. Deze schilden worden de elytra genoemd en bedekken de kwetsbare en vliezige achtervleugels.
Kevers vormen de grootste orde van de insecten en zijn vanwege het wereldwijde voorkomen en de enorme soortenrijkdom een van de weinige insectengroepen die bij het grote publiek bekend zijn.

In Europa komen zo'n 20.000 soorten voor. In Nederland en België komen ongeveer 4.200 soorten kevers voor, waaronder veel waterkevers zoals de geelgerande watertor en het schrijvertje. Bekende landkevers zijn het lieveheersbeestje, de heldenbok en de meikever.

Beetles (Coleoptera) are an order of winged insects (Insecta). Beetles are different from all other insects by the wings that have changed in hard shells. These shields are called elytra and cover the vulnerable and membranous hind wings.
Beetles are the largest order of insects and are due to the global prevention and huge biodiversity one of the few groups of insects that are known to the general public.

In Europe some 20,000 species. In the Netherlands and Belgium are approximately 4,200 species of beetles for, including many water beetles like the great diving beetle and the Schrijvertje. Known country beetles are the ladybug, the cerambyx cerdo and Junebug.
