Gede National Monument, Kenya (East Gate)

            The old Swahili city of Gede (or Gedi), located about 6 km from the Indian Ocean beach town of Watamu, was a Swahili trading town whose origins go back to the 12th century, the period of Islamization of the Swahili Coast of East Africa. While apparently not a major trading post, archaeological evidence points to its connection with the Indian Ocean trade network. It is unclear why Gede was abandoned in the early 17th century; the advancement of the nomadic Galla people from Somalia probably was a major reason, but other factors like disease, famine, or failing water supplies may have contributed as well.

At its peak in the 15th century, Gede may have housed as many as 3,000 inhabitants. There are several mosques, cisterns and wells, residential complexes, and even palace for the city’s sheikh. The city was enclosed by two walls of defense, an outer wall enclosing 45 acres (18 hectares) and an inner wall enclosing 18 acres (7.3 hectares). However, there is evidence that some houses and even a large mosque were built outside the city walls as well.
