Atop Gjógv

            While the town and harbor of Gjógv are both worthy of spending time in (and I did), there are a couple of good hikes to do starting from this village.  This is actually true of pretty much every village on the Faroe Islands, but that is beside the point.  The trail from Gjógv is a leg-burner.  It is steep.  And by steep, I really mean steep.  It is also not for the faint of heart as it meanders right along a tall, steep cliff edge the whole way.  While there is a decent fence between you and a long fall, it is far from completely reassuring.  Combine that with the fact that the day I was there it was windy unlike anything I was used to.  I was buffeted constantly by winds that wouldn't stop and constantly rocked me back and forth on my feet.  The fact that I reached the top falling only a single time and somehow managed to make a non-shaky pinhole exposure amaze me in hindsight.  But I love adventures like that.  This is that pinhole exposure, made from about as high as I went on this hike.  Looking down you can see Gjógv in the distance and just make out the line of the trail that I followed up.  I think a braced my tripod up against the fence as well as I could and then huddled over both it and the pinhole, trying to create a windbreak as much as possible for the exposure.
