            চট্টগ্রামের শস্যভাণ্ডার খ্যাত রাঙ্গুনিয়ার গুমাই বিল মূলত কর্ণফুলী নদীর বিধৌত উর্বর ভূমি। দেশের দ্বিতীয় বৃহত্তম ধানের গোলাখ্যাত গুমাই বিল উৎপাদন ও অর্থনীতির গতি প্রবাহ আজ চট্টগ্রামকে করেছে সমৃদ্ধ।

গুমাই বিলের উৎপাদিত মোট খাদ্য এলাকার চাহিদা মিটিয়ে জাতীয় খাদ্য চাহিদাও করছে সমৃদ্ধ। দেশের বৃহত্তম চলন বিলের পর বাংলাদেশের দ্বিতীয় বৃহত্তম রাঙ্গুনিয়ার এই গুমাই বিলের মোট আবাদি জমির পরিমান ২ হাজার ৪’শ হেক্টর। কর্ণফুলী নদী বিধৌত উর্বর ভূমি যা এই বিলের পলিবাহিত জমি উর্বরতার কারণে প্রতি বছর বিপুল পরিমান ফসল উৎপাদন করছে।

গুমাইয়ের সাথে রাঙ্গুনিয়াবাসীর সম্পর্ক অত্যন্ত নিবিড়। গুমাই এক সময় ঝিল আকারে থাকলেও রাঙ্গুনিয়ার উপর দিয়ে বয়ে চলা কর্ণফুলী নদী এবং গুমাইয়ের কুলে নেমে আসা প্রচুর পাহাড়ী ঝর্ণা, ছড়া ও ঝর্ণাবাহিত পলি এবং পলি বালি মিশ্রিত স্রোতধারা পরিকল্পিতভাবে প্রবাহের ব্যবস্থা করে রেখেছে গুমাইয়ের বুকে। বাইনালার ছড়া, সোনাইছড়ি, মুন্দরী, কুরমাই, ইছামতি, বারঘোনিয়া, ঘাগড়া হ্রদ খাল ও গুট্টাকার খাল গুমাইতে প্রবাহিত করা হয়।

গুমাইয়ের ঝিলে পলি-বালি জমে একসময় চাষাবাদের উপযুগি হয়ে উঠলে রাঙ্গুনিয়ার কৃষকরে তাতে কৃষিপণ্য চাষবাদ করা শুরু করে। পরবর্তীতে উক্ত গুমাই বিল হয়ে উঠে দেশের শস্য ভান্ডার হিসেবে যা এখন দেশের অর্থনীতিকে করছে সমৃদ্ধ ও রাঙ্গুনিয়ার কৃষি অর্থনীতিতে সার্বিক উন্নয়নে ব্যাপক অবদান রাখছে।

বর্তমানে প্রধান সড়ক সংলগ্ন জমি ভরাট করে তোলা হচ্ছে নানা স্থাপনা। এমনকি ইট ভাটাও তৈরি হয়েছে এখানে। এ অবস্থায় ঐতিহ্য হারাতে বসেছে ঐতিহ্যবাহী এই বিল।

Gumai Beel is one of the largest paddy fields in Bangladesh which is located at Rangunia upazila in Chittagong. The area of this beel starts from Mariam Nagar of Rangunia upazila and lasts up to Nishchintopur of Rangamati. Another area of the beel is situated in Kaptai of Rangamati. The amount of rice that can be produced from this vast region, it can provide two-and-a-half-day rice for all the people of the country. When it’s autumn, the fields look golden. This beel produces Amon and Boro mainly. But recently, the adjacent land to the main road of this beel has been filling up with various types of constructions.
