            This is the view looking east. This was taken at 6:54 AM, just about the moment that "official" sunrise was occurring.

I'm spending the winter months of 2014-2015 in a warm spot on the beach in Indialantic, FL (if I have Internet access, it doesn't matter too much where I'm physically located). I'm trying to get up about an hour before sunrise every morning, and be out on the beach for a morning walk just as the sun peeks up above the horizon.  

But sometimes the sun doesn’t appear at all. Sometimes it rains. Sometimes it’s so foggy that you can barely see the water’s edge from a hundred feet away. Sometimes it’s so cold that glaciers can be seen floating in the water, having come all the way down from the North Pole. (Just kidding — it never gets anywhere near that cold!).

Ironically, I can’t always tell what it’s going to be like outside, when I first get up in the morning. It’s still pitch-black outside at 5 AM, so I can’t even see the water. And my iPhone weather app will sometimes tell me that it’s going to be a sunny day, the first bit of gray light that appears in the sky around 6 AM tells me that that is definitely not the case. Occasionally the reverse is true: my iPhone will tell me that it’s raining, or that the sky is filled with heavy clouds — when it’s apparent from looking out the window that that’s not true either.

On the days when it is dark and cloudy and foggy/rainy, I typically stay inside. But if it’s not actually pouring, sometimes I’ll venture out with my camera. Some of the birds will still be there, and a few of the people, too. It’s not as colorful as a full-fledged sunrise — but it’s still worth the effort.
