Jack Pine in the Jack Pine Plains - a photo on Flickriver

A lot of the sandy soil around us is managed for jack pine production. As you go along the roads, you'll see stands of jack pine of uniform heights. Despite their barren appearance, they provide excellent habitat for a variety of birds and are prime blueberry territory. In nature, jack pines reproduce mostly by forest fires, but in the U.P., clear cutting can replicate those conditions.
