Freezing 'Duchess'

            The days following Christmas 1995 were noted for the intensity of the cold weather, with perhaps 29th December being the coldest of the lot. After a clear night the temperature plunged to well below zero and produced a most spectacular hoare frost as can be seen from the encrusted trees, telegraph wires and line side vegetation. This coincided with the visit of the National Railway Museum's 'Princess Coronation' No. 46229 'Duchess of Hamilton' to the Great Central Railway; first first train of the day had already been delayed by nearly two hours due to the freezing point work at Loughborough, and this is the second service  with 'The Duchess' making spectacular progress towards Woodthorpe Bridge on the outskirts of Loughborough with the 1.15pm to Leicester North.
