Leer Lutherkirche Kirchturm mit Schwan

wurde 1675 als Barockkirche gebaut, später mehrfach erweitert und zu einer Kreuzkirche ausgebaut.
Der Turmbau wurde nach Genehmigung durch die preußische Regierung am 1766 begonnen.

Der „einfache“ Schwan bekrönt in Ostfriesland fast 70 Kirchtürme. Der Schawn ist das Symbol für Luther.

Eine goldene weltliche Krone ziert nur den Schwanenhals dieser Kirche.
Das hatte folgenden Grund:
Nach vielen Streitigkeiten mit den in Leer vorherrschenden Reformierten durfte der Glockenturm an der Westseite erst 1766, also rund 90 Jahre nach der Einweihung der zuerst einfachen Einraumkirche, angebaut werden. Die Genehmigung dazu gab der Preußenkönig Friedrich II „der Große“, weil Ostfriesland seit 1744 zu seinem Königreich gehörte. (nach dem Aussterben der Cirksena-Fürsten) Aus Dankbarkeit hat ihn die Luthergemeinde mit der Hinzufügung der Weltenkrone geehrt.
