282/365 - a photo a day for 2025

            Goodrington Sands station, Paignton, Devon.

Goodrington Sands Halt was opened by the Great Western Railway in July 1928, to tap into the burgeoning holiday trade which developed in Britain between the First and Second World Wars. It was sited at Tanners Lane level crossing one mile south of Paignton, next to where the Urban District Council was developing facilities to cater for the holidaymakers. The level crossing was replaced by a bridge in 1956 and the station was provided with minimal facilites on the new bridge.  

British Rail closed the line between Paignton and Kingswear in December 1972 and sold the route to a private company to operate as a heritage steam railway. Steam trains ceased to call here in 2020 due to Covid restrictions and the stop has not since been reinstated, although trains continue to pass through.
