Great War Memorial

            Zottegem is a municipality and town in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The city is located in the Flemish Ardennes and has more than 25,000 inhabitants.

 The oldest found mention of the place dates back to 1083 as "Sotengem". The name comes from Sutto-inga-haim and means the homestead of the clan of Sutto; Sutto was a Germanic name meaning "sweet." Zottegem originated as a small settlement on the left bank of the Bettelhovebeek.

Lamoraal I of Gavere, Count of Egmont (Egmond) (Elzele) was a general and statesman in the Seventeen Provinces just before the start of the Eighty Years' War and is buried in the main church.
