Valley of the Gods Sunrise - a photo on Flickriver

            First light glows on the monuments that make up the heart of the Valley of the Gods.  The Castle (center) is flanked by De Gaulle and his Troops (r) and Rudoph and Santa Claus (far left), names probably given by rock climbers rather than the Native Americans who have inhabited this area for many millennia.  

The monuments and buttes were once part of Cedar Mesa to the west, and are composed of (no surprise) Cedar Mesa Sandstone.  This is part of the area removed from the Bears Ears National Monument by the Trump administration.
