The Omaha - a photo on Flickriver

The Omaha

            LTS71 heads back to Wyeville with a lone centerbeam on a hot and windy June afternoon. At the time Smart Sand hadn't installed the loop track, so empties were typically shoved down the lead. Of course, Smart Sand didn't always load each car consecutively either. And that was the case on this day. So 71 brought everything up to Wyeville, sorted out the mess up there, and left their pick up on the main. Hence the reason for the lack of two bays on the way back. As for the the centerbeam, it was picked up earlier in the day when 71 made a trip up to Warrens.

At the time, 3890 had to be damn near one of the last "straight" -2's on the UP roster. Unbeknownst to us, it's time for a rebuild was drawing near. In less than a week, it was pulled from 71 and sent down to NLR for it's turn through the SD40N program. It would emerge as UP Y327. 

The Camp Douglas lead was part of the CMO mainline from Saint Paul to Elroy. In 1987, the North Western pulled the tracks north of Reedsburg, but kept this short segment to Camp Douglas. Presumably this was done to keep access to Volk Field and possibly a connection with the SOO. Anyway, when I started foaming this was all car storage. So it was pretty cool when Smart Sand decided to locate a loading facility here to gain some UP access.
