LONGSHAW - a photo on Flickriver

LONGSHAW

            STOOP. This is one of two on this estate. They are an old Signpost first appearing in 1709 and installed at different points along drovers roads at the time to help prevent travelers perishing in extreme harsh weather.
This one is sighted behind a tree just beyond main entrance to the drive to the house and can be viewed easily on way from bus to the cafe. It is sited just opposite to Longshaw Lodge, a gatekeepers cottage,
They will become interesting as there is writing on four sides of the stone, though perhaps now rather faded. If you seek others in Derbyshire or South yorkshire you will find Sheffield spelt 8 different ways, Chesterfield 14 different ways.
